| AS 9100 Series
Accreditation Programs
AS9100: Applies to companies that manufacture products, including Prime OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and their suppliers
AS9110: Specifically for companies that service and repair equipment, often called MROs (maintenance, repair, and overhaul)
AS9120: For distributors of equipment, companies that buy, sell, and distribute aviation, space, and defense equipment
ISO/IEC 17025 Lab Accreditation
AS9100 is an aerospace standard based on the ISO 9001 quality system requirements.
AS9100 takes the ISO 9001 requirements and supplements them with additional quality system requirements, which are established by the aerospace industry in order to satisfy DOD, NASA and FAA quality requirements. The intent of the standard is to establish a single quality management system for use within the aerospace industry.
The standard is supported by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG). The official title of AS9100 is “AS9100 Quality Management Systems – Requirements for Aviation, Space and Defense Organizations”.
AS9100 is a product of an international effort to establish a single quality management system for use within the aerospace industry.
The industry requires their subcontractors and suppliers to be AS9100 certified. By achieving certification to AS9100, suppliers can gain a competitive advantage and benefit from the improved processes and continuous improvement that is the foundation of ISO 9001 certified Quality Management Systems.
AS9110 Certification | Requirements for Aviation Space and Defence Maintenance Organisations
AS9110 is a standard that defines the quality system requirements for organisations whose primary business is in the aircraft industry at all levels of the maintenance, repair & overhaul (MRO) process. It is focused on the control of repair schemes and maintenance plans, configuration management, and the skills and qualifications necessary to perform MRO tasks within the aerospace community.
Based on ISO 9001 but with nearly 100 additional requirements specific to the aerospace MRO industry, AS9110 provides suppliers with a comprehensive quality system focused on areas directly impacting product safety and reliability, such as:
- Discusses civil aviation authorities and where in the standard that those requirements apply
- Defines terms unique to the MRO industry such as maintenance, technical data, human factors, and release certificates
- Expanded requirements for personnel conducting MRO task
- Addresses the qualification of new maintenance processes
MRO must meet the requirements of the Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 43 & 145, the Civil Aviation Administration of China and the European Authority for aviation safety. This includes approvals, ratings, licenses and permits. MRO also needs to have approvals for certain types of repairs, rated on the specific airframe and/or engine platform, and carry the appropriate regulatory certificates.
AS9120 Certification | Requirements for Aviation Space & Defence Distributors
AS9120 is based on a standard published by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) titled, “Quality Management Systems-Aerospace Requirements for Stockist / Distributors”. It includes ISO 9001 and specific requirements related to the Aerospace Industry.
AS9120 standardises quality management system requirements and is used at all levels of the supply chain by organisations around the world. The use of AS9120 results in improved quality, cost, and delivery performance through the reduction or elimination of organisation-unique requirements, effective implementation of the quality management system, and wider application of good practice. While primarily developed for the aviation, space, and defence industry, this standard can also be used in other industry sectors when a quality management system with additional requirements over an ISO 9001 system is needed.
AS9120 includes organisations that procure products and split them into smaller quantities, including those that coordinate a customer or regulatory controlled process on the product. This standard is not intended for organisations that maintain or repair products, or for organisations that perform work that affect or could affect product characteristics or conformity. It also ensures that materials are handled properly through the chain of custody, traceability, and the availability of records.
With the AS9120 standard, you will not only gain quality and efficiency benefits, but you will be better aligned to exceed customer expectations. AS9120 can provide the competitive edge you need.
As part of the Aerospace and Defense (AS&D) supply chain management processes, the Industry Controlled Other Party (ICOP) certification scheme qualifies all organizations that purchase goods and services to be recognized and accepted through the AS certifications issued by Aerospace Quality Management System Certification Bodies (ASCBs) accredited by International Accreditation Service (MCAB). MCAB has achieved recognition under the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) to serve the “Americas” region covering North, Central and South America. The IAQG is the scheme owner of the worldwide operated Industry Controlled Other Party (ICOP) certification scheme. The Americas Aerospace Quality Group (AAQG) manages this ICOP certification scheme for the Americas through the Americas Certification Oversight team (ACOT).
The IAQG Certification Scheme is designed to streamline the certification processes and minimize the complexities and costs associated with supplier audits. This framework offers a roadmap for the impartial, accredited third-party certification of aviation, space, and defense products.
By having suppliers certified under this scheme, aerospace companies can rest assured that the products and services they receive meet the requirements of the industry’s stringent standards.
The ICOP Scheme requires certification bodies operating in the ICOP Scheme to be accredited by an accreditation body that is a signatory to the IAF Multilateral Recognition Arrangement (MLA) with a main scope of management system certification. The Scheme sets voluntary standards for certification within the worldwide supply chain of the aviation, space, and defense industry. MCAB provides accreditation services to ASCBs for AS9100, AS9110, and AS9120 Aerospace Quality Management System (AQMS) standards. Many major AS&D manufacturers require their direct suppliers be AS certified and recommend that all of the AS&D supply chain be AS third-party audited.
ISO/IEC 17025 Lab Accreditation
ISO/IEC 17025 is an International Standard designed for the accreditation of Testing and Calibration Laboratories. It includes quality management system requirements along with technical requirements to ensure that each laboratory is equipped to perform particular tests and calibration activities.
